Happy Book Birthday!!! BREAKABLE by Tammara Webber- Reviewed by Maybelis L.

I like to thank Tammara Webber for writing such a beautiful story, for giving us Lucas and for her wonderful acknowlegments.

“Finally, here’s to everyone who has survived something devastating-something that shattered your self-confidence and distorted your world in one blow. Whether you were fierce in the face of it or fell to pieces or shoved it out of sight for years -I don’t care how you got here. Every day you are stronger. Every day you are healing. Every day that you survive, you are telling that event, that person, that illness, that memory: YOU DO NOT DEFINE ME. Keep on.”

Genre: NA, Romance

Synopsis:

He was lost and alone. Then he found her.
And the future seemed more fragile than ever.

As a child, Landon Lucas Maxfield believed his life was perfect and looked forward to a future filled with promise — until tragedy tore his family apart and made him doubt everything he ever believed.

All he wanted was to leave the past behind. When he met Jacqueline Wallace, his desire to be everything she needed came so easy…

As easy as it could be for a man who learned that the soul is breakable and that everything you hoped for could be ripped away in a heartbeat

My thoughts:

Breakable was a mesmerizing coming of age story. We see Landon/Lucas grow up from being a scarred young boy to a troubled adolescent and finally to the hero we all came to know and love in Easy. This was a truly remarkable tale of loss, love and self discovery. Webber painted a beautifully detailed masterpiece that will touch the contours of your heart.

Review:

I can’t tell you enough how much I loved this book. Landon deserved to have his story told. Following the tragic event that rattled his family to pieces, Landon’s life gets turned upside down never to be the same again. He learns to cope the best he can given the circumstances he faces; leaving his before life behind and starting over at a new town with a withdrawn father he believes holds him responsible for his mother’s violent death. That’s not an easy cross to carry when you are a thirteen year old boy with no one to turn to and no real path to follow. This coming of age story is one that I’m sure a lot of young boys and girls can relate to. The temptations of drugs, peer pressure and bullying are all too real nowadays and it resonates through the writing with exquisite taste and sensitivity.

“All right , big guy.” He took my shoulders and looked me in the eye. “You’re the man of the house while I’m gone. Take care of your mother.”
“Okay, Dad. Will do.”

We see this young boy endure a heavy burden and go through the motions of an aimless life that was slowly leading him down a dark, endless tunnel of nothingness. My heart ached for him. The emotions in this book are so real and palpable that they grip at your soul. I wanted to jump in and hug him and be there for him and tell him that everything was gonna be alright.

When Dr.Heller presents him with a way out, Landon doesn’t hesitate, he takes it like an asthmatic patient in desperate need of air. He just needed someone to believe in him, to guide him and to give him the opportunity to rise above the cruel hand he was dealt. I cried in that part of the book, because I could feel his need to have someone love him .

“Everyone isn’t logical. Everything doesn’t make sense in the end. Sometimes you have to forget about explenations or excuses and leave people and places behind, because otherwise they will drag you straight down.”

I also very much enjoyed getting Lucas side in Easy. I always felt there were parts I didn’t fully understand and getting the entire picture from his side was an enlightening experience.

His growing feelings and desire for Jacqueline experienced through his voice was captivating and heart warming. I loved his adoration for her, the little things he notices, the way he puts her well being above everything else, even his own feelings. He is selfless and caring in a way that is rare considering everything he’s gone through in his life. The internal battle we see him go through due to his desire for Jacqueline is quite hot, swoony and a whole different experience getting it straight from his thoughts.

“I’d promised him to be appropriate with her for the remainder of the semester, but the desire coiling through me was anything but appropriate. It was fire and possession, adoration and need, hunger and thirst and an impossible, unbearable hope. I couldn’t stand the thought of her leaving me for five minutes, let alone forver. I couldn’t have her, but I wanted her so, so badly.”

I felt that the pov from Landon to Lucas on the different times of his life was a unique and appealing form of telling both stories, and  a perfect balance between the two. Webber did an amazing job of showing us the struggle and harshness that Landon endures as a young adolescent trying his best to deal with the tragic loss of his mother and the new found hope he finds in Jacqueline as an adult.

“That night had shattered me. I’d walled myself in to keep from breaking further, but no defense will protect you from every possible pain. I was still just as breakable as everyone else-the girl in my arms included.”

Landon was a strong soul, kind and brave and above all loyal. I commend him for his endurance and I adore Lucas for his commitment and his beautiful heart .

Jacqueline became his renowned dream, his awakening, and it was touching to see him accept and remember his before life without the guilt and anguish that consumed him before. This amazing boy truly deserved his happy ending. My hero, Landon Lucas Maxfield.

“She’d conjured love in the heart of a man whose soul had been frozen for years, anesthetized by too much pain and guilt to bear.”

Synopsis:

Northern was supposed to be a fresh start—a place where people didn’t know who I was or how I had spent years in and out of mental institutes. People didn’t know about my parents death or the island no one heard of. But when Peter sits next to me in lit class, I can’t stop the memories, and I don’t want to. He looks too much like the boy from the island, and despite my best intentions, coaxes my secrets from me.

He’s gorgeous, irresistible, a little mad, and completely lost—we are a pair of broken cogs in a world neither of us truly fits into. He is somehow gentle and fierce, heartbreaking in his devotion and savage in his defense.

When Belle, his best friend, shows up, pale and lovely and sick, Peter pulls away from me, a startling withdrawal. It’s a relationship that scares and confuses me. She is at times warm and friendly, and other times is violent and unpredictable.

Peter says that he wants me, but refuses to let himself get close. And there are secrets, surrounding both of us, that border on nightmares. As the memories close in, as Belle gets sicker and more violent, I’m torn between what is true and what I believe, and what this magical boy knows about my mysterious past.

  EXCERPT:

I didn’t recognize the name on the street sign. Nothing about the rural road looked familiar or

friendly. Tall, imposing trees and overgrown weeds choked the front of the dilapidated home.

Windows were boarded up. There was a gaping hole where the front door had been. I shivered,

wanting to be far away from here…wherever here was.

Walking felt harder than it should be, and I stumbled off the chilly asphalt, wincing as

sharp gravel dug into my feet.

My bare feet?

I stopped and looked down. Chipped pink nail polish peeked through the dirt…and blood.

Mud caked the legs of my pants, leaving the hems stiff. It made sense, seeing as how I wasn’t

wearing any shoes, but the blood…I didn’t understand why there was blood staining the knees of

my jeans.

My vision clouded and dulled, as if a gray film had been dropped over my eyes. As I

stared at the weathered asphalt under my feet, large and smooth rocks replaced the tiny stones.

Something dark and oily seeped over the rocks, slipping through the cracks.

Sucking in a sharp gasp, I blinked and the image was gone.

Hands trembling, I raised them. They were also covered with dirt and scratches. My nails

were broken, bloodied. A silver ring wrapped, encased in soil, around my thumb. Air froze in my

chest as my gaze crawled over my arms. The sleeves of my sweater were torn, revealing pale

flesh covered in bruises and gashes. My legs started to shake as I swayed forward. I tried to

remember how this had happened, but my head was empty—a black void where nothing existed.

A car drove by, coasting to a stop a few feet in front of me. Somewhere in the trenches of

my subconscious, I recognized the flashing red and blue lights as a source of safety. Elegantly

scrawled along the black-and-gray side of the cruiser were the words ADAMS COUNTY SHERIFF’S

DEPARTMENT.

Adams County? A flash of familiarity came and went.

The driver’s door opened, and a deputy stepped out. He said something into the radio on

his shoulder before he looked at me.

“Miss?” He started around the cruiser, taking tentative steps. He looked young for a

deputy. Barely out of high school and able to carry a gun seemed wrong somehow. Was I in high

school? I didn’t know. “We’ve received some calls into dispatch concerning you,” he said

gently. “Are you okay?”

I tried to respond, but only a hoarse squeak came out. Clearing my throat, I winced as the

motion scratched and pulled. “I…I don’t know.”

“Okay.” The deputy held up his hands as he approached me, as if I were a skittish deer

about to bolt. “My name is Deputy Rhode. I’m here to help you. Do you know what you’re doing

out here?”

“No.” Knots formed in my belly. I didn’t even know where here was.

His smile strained. “What’s your name?”

My name? Everyone knew their name, but as I stared at the deputy, I couldn’t answer his

question. The knots started twisting more. “I don’t…I don’t know what my name is.”

He blinked, and the smile was completely gone. “You don’t remember anything?”

I tried again, concentrating on the empty space between my ears. That was how it felt.

And I knew that wasn’t good. My eyes started to tear up.

“Miss, it’s okay. We’ll get you taken care of.” He reached out, lightly taking hold of my

arm. “We’ll get this sorted.”

Deputy Rhode led me around the back of his cruiser. I didn’t want to sit behind the

Plexiglas, because I knew that wasn’t good. Only bad people sat behind the glass in police

cruisers. I wanted to object, but before I could say anything, he settled me into the seat and

wrapped a coarse blanket around my shoulders.

Before he locked me in the bad part of the car, he knelt and smiled reassuringly.

“Everything’s going to be okay.”

But I knew he was lying, trying to make me feel better. It didn’t work. How could

everything be okay when I didn’t know my own name?

ABOUT DON’T LOOK BACK:

Samantha is a stranger in her own life. Until the night she disappeared with her best friend, Cassie, everyone said Sam had it all—popularity, wealth, and a dream boyfriend.

Sam has resurfaced, but she has no recollection of who she was or what happened to her that night. As she tries to piece together her life from before, she realizes it’s one she no longer wants any part of. The old Sam took “mean girl” to a whole new level, and it’s clear she and Cassie were more like best enemies. Sam is pretty sure that losing her memories is like winning the lottery. She’s getting a second chance at being a better daughter, sister, and friend, and she’s falling hard for Carson Ortiz, a boy who has always looked out for her—even if the old Sam treated him like trash.

But Cassie is still missing, and the facts about what happened to her that night isn’t just buried deep inside of Sam’s memory—someone else knows, someone who wants to make sure Sam stays quiet. All Sam wants is the truth, and if she can unlock her clouded memories of that fateful night, she can finally move on. But what if not remembering is the only thing keeping Sam alive?

“This engrossing thriller packs a heady atmospheric punch with plenty of theatrical scares,” Kirkus Reviews
“Armentrout has written another winner. From the first page to the last, she builds both terror and confusion to the point where readers will be hooked and on the edge of their seat. This standalone contains all of Armentrout’s usual trademarks– a strong and determined heroine, witty comments and hot guys–but she adds in an extra layer by ratcheting up the suspense to the highest degree and follows it up with an ending no one will see coming.” RT BOOK REVIEWS 4 1/2 Stars TOP PICK
