Synopsis:

When you’ve lost everything you love, how do you fight the darkness?

Ava left Istanbul with a new identity, new name, and new magic she could barely control. Laid low by Malachi’s sacrifice, she searches for help from the fabled Irina. But will the secretive women of the Irin race welcome or shun her? Ava’s origins are still a mystery, and her powers are darker than any they’ve encountered before.

The Irin world hangs in the balance. And as the children of angels battle their own demons, ancient rivalries among the Fallen threaten to wreak havoc on earth.

Thousand of miles away, a warrior wakes with no memory of his identity or his people. Stumbling though the dark and twisted schemes of fallen angels, ravenous Grigori, and even his own leaders, he must find a way back to the one thing he remembers. A single voice calls him. Malachi has one mission.

“Come back to me.”

THE SINGER is the second book in the Irin Chronicles, a contemporary fantasy series from Elizabeth Hunter, author of the Elemental Mysteries.

My thoughts:

I absolutely love anything written by Elizabeth Hunter and this was no different. This new series has grabbed my attention and pulled me into this new world and now I want to explore. I want more from this characters and despite the fact that in this book much more was revealed, I still feel like there’s a lot left to know and I am eager to discover it.

Review:

This book is the second in The Irin Chronicles. A new world of Paranormal created by Elizabeth Hunter with Fallen Angels and two races caught in a never ending war, The Irin and The Grigori.

The Irin are the descendants of the Forgiven. The Forgiven were the fallen angels who left their women and children behind to return to heaven when they were called, in return their descendants had been blessed with knowledge and magic in exchange for their sacrifice. The Irin purpose is to protect humanity and preserve its knowledge.

The Grigori are the offspring of the Fallen angels who never left Earth, and they are predatorswho have no purpose but to gain power for their masters and indulge in their own appetites. The Grigori feed on the soul of humans in order to remain strong, which normally results in death.

We met these characters in The Scribe, the first book in this series where Ava, a regular human who hears voices in a language she doesn’t understand and has never come accross with, travels to Istanbul in hopes of meeting with a doctor who may help her stop the voices. She got more than she was looking for. Ava found her place in the world, the race she belongs to and the man who belonged to her, Malachi. But happiness doesn’t last long and at the end of The Scribe, Malachi is killed by a Grigori.

The Singer begins with Ava grieving Malachi’s death as she is taken to the Irina haven so they can help her develop her powers. The Irinas have been hiding for over two hundred years, since The Rending. A time where the Grigori attacked and murdered thousands of Irin, mainly women and children in an attempt to eradicate their race. Since then, the Irina that were left have been hiding.

Ava travels to Sarihofn, a safe haven where many Irina have been kept safe for hundreds of years. Among them is Orsola, one of the eldest Irina left. Orsola’s power is reading people and she discovers that Ava is a daughter of Leoc, the forgiven angel who gives Irina visions. During her stay there, the Irina still patrol and hunt Grigori. But one night, the haven gets compromised and they have to leave.

Ava travels to Oslo where a big surprise awaits. But the Irin have only found a sliver of Ava’s power and she feels something dark lurking inside her. Will she find out what she truly is?

There’s so much going on in this book, it’s hard to explain everything that happens. Unraveling this story was exciting. I devoured the pages. Every new character introduced in this book is engaging and likable in their own way. They all have a story and you can’t help but falling for every single one. They become family, they have pain and history but above all they are a family who will do anything to defend their race from the Grigori.

This book has some answers to questions we asked on The Scribe but it also brought up more mysteries that Ava and the Irin must find.

Elizabeth’s writing is enthraling and compeling. I was sucked in and I cannot wait for book three.
